What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is taking the ideas of others and passing them off as your own without crediting the source (Merriam-Webster, 2020). Was this definition plagiarized?  In this example that answer is "no."  The definition was paraphrased from Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary, and the original source is cited, giving the author credit for the definition.

Why is understanding plagiarism and how to avoid it important to you as a student? Plagiarism is unethical and the theft of another person's ideas and it is also a violation of the South College Honor Code.
